LIST PICK

MAJIK ANIMAL

London duo Majik have yet to let up with a consistent release schedule, making an ever strong mark on the crossover realm of electronic, R&B and pop. Here at TMR, we’ve picked up no less than seven of Jamie Mac and Marcus Fowler’s self-produced tracks, and interviewed the former university flatmates, and today ‘Animal’ makes the eighth List Pick for Majik. With hints of trip-hop in the relaxed rhythms, ‘90s R&B-pop in Fowler’s breathy, sung-spoken lyrics, and a plentitude of contemporary electronic music in the serene, pulsating production courtesy of DAW wizard Mac. As ever, Majik’s music is veiled in mystery, exaggerated by the music video which follows Fowler over a rugged landscape which begins with the singer-songwriter being abandoned in the night, hands tied, although with a generous fire burning. As he searches to find his way back to civilisation, stopping along the way to admire to stunning views and joined by Mac for a brief moment, our vision is interrupted by flashbacks of a woman. For all its beauty (whether scenic or musical), ‘Animal’ is a song that taps into the human condition of heartbreak, our thoughts left to linger over the last few lines… “sorry doesn’t even mean a thing, / I wanted more than you could bring, / so lost in the concept, / was it love from the onset? / or was I just an object? / ‘cause I don’t even know, yeah.” - Hannah Thacker
